Column styles are sexy and yet conservative, but there are many different kinds of strapless dress to choose from, so finding the perfect one for you could be a little tricky.

Deciding on the correct colour for your dress is vitally important, as you need to pick a color that compliments you and the style of dress as well. Black is a common choice for this dress fit, as it will work well for all sorts of occasions. Bright, clear colours can work for those with strong, clear hair colours, e.g. dyed hair or naturally black, brown or blonde hair. Those with multi-toned hair ought to go for a more subtle, earthy shades.

Strapless dresses in white can look very regal and formal, as though you were about to go to a regency ball with Jane Austen. A style of that period, the empire line dress, is very common with strapless dresses so they create a nice silhouette. This is a popular prom gown style, pulling the fabric tighter under the bust, can create more shape and structure on the upper torso, and looks incredibly flattering.

This style of dress looks great whether trimmed long or short, although some cuts will be more appropriate for some occasions. For example, a long, red strapless dress could be appropriate for an evening occasion, but the same red dress would look better with a shorter hem for a bridesmaid at a wedding or for a homecoming party.

The fabric chosen for strappless styles depends much upon the color that you choose to use, often it is best to contrast the two. For example, choose a pale, soft lilac color and use a clear, crisp satin.

An incredibly stylish way to personalize a cheap strapless dress, is to create one strap with a bought piece of matching fabric. This creates the one-shoulder dress, which was incredibly popular at last years oscars.
