Halterneck Dresses & Backless Dresses

Longline blue twist backless gownWhether you want a dress to wear to your prom or perhaps to a wedding, a halter neck dress is a beautiful option to consider.

There are so many different styles that there is bound to be one that looks absolutely stunning on your fiture.

Whether it's black, pink, white or whatever shade, halters look chic in any colour.

Twist Back halter

The most fun style of halter is the twist back.

This look is incredibly flattering for those with a tiny frame and small chest.

The twist back is identified by the halter straps starting from the centre of the chest and crossing around your neck; usually the fabric will be twisted, and it won't be just a simple strap.

Make sure that these dresses have full length skirts, as these halters can look strange with shorter hems.  Buying these in bright colours can really show off your personality.

Simple white prom dress with thin strapsBikini Halter

These styles are shown by having very small spaghetti straps coming from the middle of each half of your chest, similar to those of a triangle bikini.

This style looks great on those with a smaller or petite frame, especially those with a straight body, as this will highlight curves and accentuate your figure.

See if you can find a dress with a patterned waist or bodice as this will further enhance your shape.

High Cut Halter

These are formal styles that cut right up to the neck with a very fitted ring of cloth around the neck.

You'll notice that these dresses are very popular on the red carpet, especially with Nicole Kidman and Jessica Biel.

This is a style that looks great on both boyish frames and on curvy womanly shapes - wearing these gowns in a striking color is bound to attract attention !

Key Cut Halter

This is a sexy look for a full or shapely figureThese are a flattering style on those with a reasonable amount of curves, as they are recognised by the slit or cut out "key" shape over the bust or décolleté.

The size of the key should help you to choose the length of dress: a tiny slit should mean a short skirt, and a large circle requires a floor length dress.

Shaped Halter

These are dresses that have a moulded bodice, and are shaped with the fabric to create the appearance of an incredibly elegant silhouette.

The straps for these styles are usually fairly substantial and appear from near the underarm.

These can look most flattering in neutral colours that will help to bring a natural glow to your skin

Handkerchief HalterLong Line handkerchief halterneck dress in black and silver sparkle

This is the most popular style of all halterneck dresses - it has no "apparent" strap, rather just a piece of fabric that ties behind the neck.

These styles should look great on those with a generous bust size, whilst those with a smaller bust would do better choosing a different style.

These styles need to have a well-fitted bodice and flowing skirt line, in order to give the illusion of you having a perfectly proportioned body.

These are a very current trend, having very little shape.

It's a look that can appear very chic if you simply add a belt around the waist or hips (depending on your height and shape).

These dresses are tight around the top and then have plenty of fabric flowing down from there.

The halter tie comes from the centre of the dress and ties at the back of the neck.

A Word of Warning

If you choose the handkerchief style, you may wish to use a safety pin to ensure that the loose tie doesn't work it's way undone!
